Yame City is located in southern Fukuoka Prefecture, approximately 50 km south of Fukuoka City. To the north lies Kurume City and the town of Hirokawa, Chikugo City to the west, Kumamoto Prefecture to the south, and Oita Prefecture to the east. Yame is a major urban area, with flat land in the central southern region and forests in the northeast. Blessed with abundant nature, Yame has prospered since ancient times. This is evident by the numerous burial mounds in the hills of Yame, including the Iwatoyama Tumulus. Yame also takes pride in its traditional crafts, such as handmade Japanese paper (washi), Buddhist altars, and paper lanterns, as well as tea, electric chrysanthemums (chrysanthemums grown out of season in light bulb fields), shiitake mushrooms, and many other kinds of local produce.
